“The Why”

Rust Belt Riders is a mission-driven social enterprise that is working to address a broken food system. We follow the “three-P’s” in all of our decision making as a company. How will our work impact people, the planet, and create prosperity? Our work aims to improve food security, combat climate change, and develop meaningful wealth creating opportunities for our community. Put simply, we aim to feed people, not landfills.

People

Across the United States and in Northeast Ohio especially, food security and access provides daily challenges for large portions of our population. By refocusing our regions efforts on a more equitable food system, and by diminishing the amount of food waste we sent to landfills, we believe our work can begin to change this sad reality.

Planet

When food enters landfills, that organic material emits methane, an extremely potent greenhouse gas that accelerates climate change. By simply diverting food from entering landfills, we not only avoid those harmful emissions, but have the chance to create climate-positive materials like soil from them.

Prosperity

In the United States, an average family will simply throw away as much as $1,500 worth of perfectly edible food. This waste costs our economy significant sums of money and roughly 1.4% of our GDP, by avoiding this needless waste, we can redirect those funds to invest in infrastructure and services to divert that material from landfills.
